Data Security

Good evening folks and welcome back. My name is Brenda Walters reporting live from Sparks, Nevada. I’m here today with Scott Morris, an IT Specialist based in Reno who works with countless businesses across the region to keep their data secure.

Cyber Security

Scott, thank you for joining us. It seems like every week there’s a new story about a company losing sensitive information due to a cyberattack. What are some of the biggest threats facing businesses today?

“Brenda, you’re right. Cyberattacks are on the rise, and they’re becoming increasingly sophisticated,” Scott explains. “Small businesses can be particularly vulnerable because they often don’t have the same resources as larger companies to invest in robust security measures.”

He goes on to say that phishing attacks are still incredibly common, with hackers tricking employees into revealing login credentials or clicking on malicious links. Ransomware is another major threat, where attackers encrypt a company’s data and demand payment for its release.

“Notwithstanding these threats,” Scott says confidently, “there are steps businesses can take to protect themselves.”

Data Backup and Disaster Recovery Solutions

He emphasizes the importance of having a strong data backup and disaster recovery plan in place. “Imagine this,” he starts, his voice softening slightly, “you’re a small business owner who relies on customer data to operate. Suddenly, your entire system crashes, and all that data is gone. Without a backup, you could be facing significant financial losses and even legal repercussions.”

Scott recommends using cloud-based backup solutions for added security and accessibility. He also suggests regularly testing your disaster recovery plan to ensure everything works smoothly in case of an emergency.

Data Security

Moving on, Scott stresses the importance of strong passwords and multi-factor authentication to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive data. “It’s crucial to remember that data security is not a one-time fix,” he explains. “You need to be constantly vigilant and adapt your security measures as new threats emerge.”

According to a recent study by IBM, the average cost of a data breach in 2022 was $4.35 million (IBM Security Report). This underscores the immense financial risk businesses face from cyberattacks.

Scott concludes by encouraging businesses to seek professional help when it comes to data security. “Don’t wait for a breach to happen before you take action,” he urges. “Reach out to Reno Computer Services, or myself, Scott Morris with RCS, and we can help you develop a comprehensive data security strategy tailored to your specific needs.
