Consequently, this can include a wide range of items: bank accounts, real estate, vehicles, investments, personal belongings, and even digital assets. It’s essential to have a comprehensive understanding of the decedent’s financial holdings. Accordingly, I guide my clients through this process carefully, ensuring no asset is overlooked.
Once all assets are identified, we must prepare a formal inventory and appraisal. This document is filed with the court as part of the probate proceedings. The appraisal helps determine the fair market value of each asset at the time of death, which is crucial for calculating estate taxes and distribution to heirs.
Nevertheless, marshalling assets isn’t always straightforward. I recall a case where a client was unaware of a safety deposit box belonging to their deceased parent. Inside, we discovered valuable jewelry and important documents. This discovery significantly impacted the estate’s overall value and highlighted the importance of thoroughness during this step.
